What is the difference between mosaic Down syndrome & Down syndrome?

BxB is raising funds to create a National mosaic Down syndrome Day specifically for the education and expression of people with mDs who are only 2-3% of Ds people.

Mosaic Down syndrome is a rare form of Down syndrome where only some of the body’s cells have an extra copy of chromosome 21. 

Causes: 

Mosaic Down syndrome occurs when a cell division error happens early in the development of an embryo. This error results in some cells having the usual 46 chromosomes, while others have 47 chromosomes (with an extra copy of chromosome 21).

Symptoms: 

The symptoms of Mosaic Down syndrome can vary widely depending on the percentage of cells that have the extra chromosome. Some individuals may have mild intellectual disabilities and physical features similar to typical Down syndrome, while others may have more severe symptoms. 

Diagnosis:

Mosaic Down syndrome is typically diagnosed through a blood test called a karyotype, which analyzes the chromosomes in the cells. 

Treatment: 

There is no cure for Mosaic Down syndrome, but treatment can focus on managing the symptoms and providing support to the individual and their family. This may include early intervention services for intellectual disabilities, medical care for any physical health issues, and educational support. 

Outlook: 

Individuals with Mosaic Down syndrome have a wide range of abilities and life expectancies. With proper support and care, they can live fulfilling and meaningful lives. It’s important to note that every person with Mosaic Down syndrome is unique and will have their own individual needs and challenges.

Elizabeth thinks that people with mosaic Down are special enough to have their own day separate from the National Down syndrome Day of 3.21.
